Produce safety listening session with FDA.

Here is your opportunity to voice your opinion on the Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA).

Monday, August 12th, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is coming to Ontario on for an explanation of the Food Safety and Modernization Act. The new rules with have will have significant impact on growers, packers, and processors. The FDA will take short statements and questions from the audience. At issue in Ontario are the proposed regulations that require testing of irrigation water, but allow no alternatives for treatment if water is higher than the maximum contaminant limit. Growers could be required to test regularly at high cost if a loud public comment is not heard. The Treasure Valley Onion Growers have raised this specific issue, but the rules affect all of us producing and eating food. We are asking for scale appropriate rules that provide a realistic level of consumer protection without putting producers out of business.

Oregon Rural Action is organizing carpools so that folks can more efficiently learn about the FSMA and get their voices heard. The FDA listening session will held at the Four Rivers Cultural Center in Ontario on Monday August 12th from 2:30 to 4:30.

Registration is required. There is no registration fee. For online registration visit, http://foodsafety.wsu.edu/fsma/index.html.
