Information about Oregon Rural Action

Oregon Rural Action is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership-based community organization working to promote social justice, agricultural and economic sustainability, and stewardship of the region's land, air and water. We're bringing people together to build strong communities by providing information and tools for local people to use in addressing the issues affecting our communities.

Sky and Fields

Oregon Rural Action is one of seven grassroots community organizations that are members of the Western Organization of Resource Councils (WORC). WORC is a regional network that has over 10,000 members and 46 local chapters. WORC helps its member groups succeed by providing training and coordination. By working at the grassroots level and joining others throughout the West to address issues that affect us all, we have the power to create the changes we need.

Oregon Rural Action would not exist without our wealth of involved members. If you're not already a member, you should join us!

OUR MISSION

We are working to promote social justice, agricultural and economic sustainability, and stewardship of the region's land, air and water.

OUR VISION

We envision the responsible and sustainable use of our natural resources and agricultural lands, a region of social livability and equality, thriving and diverse local economies, and opportunity for present and future generations.

OUR VALUES

  • Democracy -- We believe that decision making should adhere to democratic principles, both in our organization and our government.
  • Participation -- If democracy is to flourish, it is both the right and responsibility of people to participate in the decisions that affect their lives. All people should have access to the political decision making processes, regardless of race, income level, language, age, or ability.
  • Leadership development -- We are committed to helping individuals develop the skills necessary to organize successfully around issues at the local, regional, national and global levels.
  • Diversity and Cooperation -- If we are to be a truly democratic society, our decision-making bodies must reflect the diversity of our communities. Our members come from diverse racial, cultural, regional, economic, and occupational backgrounds and rarely agree on everything. We believe people still have the capacity to respect one another and work together on issues.
  • Justice -- We believe all people should have access to services providing for our basic needs, such as health care, and allowing for full participation in society, such as education.
  • Stewardship -- We have the responsibility to ensure our natural resources are used sustainably so that future generations will have a plentiful and healthy environment.
