The Snake River Chapter (SRC), based in Ontario, was formed in 2003 by members in Malheur County and folks throughout the western Treasure Valley. The SRC has focused on social justice and local food issues. The chapter has worked on critical issues from fair water billing, language access for Spanish speakers, increasing the donated fresh food supply to area food banks, youth and family gardening and self-sufficiency, and improving food stamp participation and access. The chapter’s heart and soul is in the vibrant and beautiful Four Rivers Community Garden, which is a source of fresh, local food for garden volunteers and the adjacent Next Chapter Food Pantry. The garden is a community project with many partners including St Matthew’s Episcopal Church, OSU Extension and other local organizations.
SRC is exploring new issues and projects including creating a “solarize” program like Solarize Union County, developing a Farm to School program and becoming active in Oregon’s Healthcare Reform movement.
More info about the next SRC meeting can be found on our events page.
