Ontario Presentation: New Rules on Food Processing & Direct Sales

In 2011 the Oregon Legislature clarified and changed rules making it legal to sell home-processed products including fresh and dried fruits and vegetables, grains, legumes and seeds, eggs and unadulterated honey as well as pickles, sauerkraut, preserves, jams, jellies and syrups under certain conditions. This presentation will answer questions about selling home-processed foods and foods made on-sight at Farmers Markets and other venues.

Learn About New Rules for Selling Home-Processed Foods

Canned Relish 2012

Oregon Rural Action pushed for the passage of the Farm Direct Bill in 2011 which increases economic opportunities in food processing for local people. As of January 1, 2012 Oregon permits folks to process jams, jellies, pickles, dried fruit and some other products in non-certified home kitchens. These products must be made of produce you grew and sold at “farm direct venues” including farmers’ markets, roadside stands, community supported agriculture (CSA) drop sites, buying clubs, church bazaars and other venues, provided the sales are direct from farm to retail customer. The Farm Direct law allows the sale of fresh and dried fruits and vegetables, grains, legumes and seeds, eggs and unadulterated honey as well as pickles, sauerkraut, preserves, jams, jellies and syrups under certain conditions. Previously the law required processed foods such as jams, jellies and pickles to be made in certified and inspected kitchens.

February 23 ORA teams up with the Ontario Farmers Market to provide presentations about selling processed and prepared foods at Farmers Markets and other direct market venues. Ontario's Environmental Health Inspector, Craig Geddes, will also present on the rules governing sales of foods prepared on-sight at Farmers Markets and other venues. Similar presentations will also be held in Baker and La Grande. More info on these presentations at www.oregonrural.org/events.

You can read the Oregon Department of Agriculture FAQ sheet on the Farm Direct rules, which will be the main topic of discussion at the presentations, by clicking here.
