Road Closure Approved!

In a unanimous decision Wednesday evening, the La Grande City Council approved our request to get the road closed between the public library and Max Square during Saturday market hours.

Road Closure Approved!

Specifically, the road closure will be on Fourth Street from the intersection with Adams to just before the alley behind Mamacita's Restaurant every Saturday the market is open from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm.  With the road closed our market will be able to accommodate more vendors and the market customers will have more room to mill around in and sit down.  Our MAIN concern, however, was safety.  That section of road was very congested during market hours what with vendors selling from their stalls, visitors trying to get parking and shoppers trying to shuttle their purchases to their vehicles.  Last year we had a near accident with a child running between two vendors' trucks and into the road.  With the street blocked we can avoid any accidents and customers can carry their goods to their rigs with ease.

In order to get this request approved, the city asked that we contact and receive written statements from adjacent and impacted businesses within one block of the closure.  I did visit all 15 businesses  - it was actually pretty fun because they all support the idea.  We also had to come up with a signage plan in conjunction with La Grande Public Works, and then finally we had to get a stamp of approval from the La Grande Police Department and Fire Station.  Everyone involved seemed eager to help us get this done.

Parking will be available on the back half of that section of Fourth Street, in the Library parking lot and along Jefferson Street.

Why doesn't the market move to the parking lot near Rite-Aid? Parking would be greatly improved, expansion would be easy, and road closure would not be necessary. Max Square is neat and quaint, but it really doesn't lend itself to expansion, parking for vendors and visitors, or accessibility. Too bad the lot behind Mamacita's couldn't be expanded into for the market or parking if the only desire is to keep it downtown. Parking is such a premium downtown and flow of traffic shouldn't be diverted so often as for the Farmers' Market. Just a thought.

That is an interesting idea. Several people have mentioned that lot behind Mamacita's as a possible place for relocation. I believe the city has even looked into purchasing it but the current budget woes make that an unlikely event, at least in the near future.

I feel pretty strongly that the advantages of having the market downtown outweigh the disadvantages. The market really adds a vibrancy to the downtown scene. Bringing people downtown helps the local businesses, visitors who happen to be driving through can see that La Grande has a rich and flourishing community, and Max Square provides an atmosphere that people enjoy gathering and relaxing in.

This road closure gives us quite a bit of space to grow. And really only a couple of parking spaces for the public are being sacrificed (those in front of the library). There will still be parking on the back side of Fourth Street, all along Jefferson Street and in the ODS and Library parking lots - from which access to the market will now be so much easier!
