Eastern Oregon Local Food Gathering
Oregon Food Bank partnering with Oregon Rural Action to sponsor regional networking and strategy event
Farmers, retailers, hunger advocates, and community members will be assembling in Cove at the Ascension School on April 13th from 10am to 4pm for a Community Food Systems Gathering. The event will be an opportunity for community members who are interested in building a robust local market for local agricultural products and ensuring that everyone has access to a sufficient amount of nutritious food.
Included will be several small group discussions in which participants will be able to discuss the projects they are interested in and find ways to support one another.
There will be a presentation by Oregon Rural Action on their Community Food Security Assessment. The goal of this assessment is to prioritize projects that will increase local access to local agricultural products. A representative from Eco Trust will share information on their new project FoodHub (food-hub.org), a comprehensive online catalog of food buyers and sellers in the Pacific Northwest.
To round out the day, Kelly Streit of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program will give a training from 3pm to 4pm on how local agricultural producers can become authorized retailers as part of the new WIC Fruit and Veggie program. The Fruit and Veggie program is new this year and can help local agricultural producers increase their sales to low-income residents. Participants are welcome to come for this portion only.
