Executive Director Transition

Andrea Malmberg transitioning from Executive Director to active Oregon Rural Action member.

Dear Oregon Rural Action Friends,

AndreaLast month, I asked Oregon Rural Action’s Board of Directors to develop a strategy that would allow me to transition from my current position as Executive Director in order to join the membership as an active volunteer.

My decision stems from my enthusiasm for Oregon Rural Action’s efforts, my admiration for its members, staff, and supporters and my sincere desire to see the organization prosper.  I believe that a new Executive Director will bring fresh ideas, new energy, and vital experience and skills to the position and the organization.  By transitioning to the role of a dedicated member, I will be able to focus on what I do well and allow someone else’s talents to strengthen the organization further.

In order to provide a seamless transition, we have formed a Search Committee comprised of experienced Board members and Pat Sweeney, Director of the Western Organization of Resource Councils (WORC).  In collaboration with Oregon Rural Action staff, allied organizations, and interested members, the Search Committee will seek an Executive Director with established skills in fundraising, strategic campaign work, and who is dedicated to the mission, values and goals of Oregon Rural Action and the community organizing approach to social change.

Oregon Rural Action could not have accomplished what it has so far without the steadfast support of so many individuals and organizations. Since 2001, Oregon Rural Action’s members and staff, with the support of many cooperating organizations, particularly WORC, have laid the ground work for revitalized local food systems, increased renewable energy and conservation, and protected land from inappropriate development.  In sum, we are giving voice to local people, building power, and creating pathways for robust, sustainable communities, social justice, and stewardship of our region’s land, air, and water.

The past three years have been an incredible journey, and one that I never could have imagined for my family or myself.  It has been a rare opportunity indeed to work with many extraordinary people and be welcomed wholeheartedly into Eastern Oregon.  I feel blessed with this experience and the incredible support we have had in moving our ranch from Wyoming, developing valuable relationships, and creating our new home.  The road has often not been easy to navigate, but I have given Oregon Rural Action my all, and I have received far more in return.

I am confident that this is a good time for a transition in Oregon Rural Action management.  Over the next few months, I intend to work closely with the Search Committee, members, allied organizations, WORC, and the staff to find and support a dynamic person who can continue to direct Oregon Rural Action’s good work.  Shared leadership is a central value of community organizing, and I think this is an excellent opportunity for the organization to expand its leadership base.  I look forward to staying involved and working beside other dedicated members far into the future.  If you have any questions or concerns, I would be happy to speak with you further about the transition.  As always, thank you for the inspiring work that you do.

Convivially,

Andrea Malmberg

P.S.  We would like your assistance in helping us identify the right person for this meaningful work.  In addition, we would love to receive your thoughts and stories on why you’re involved in Oregon Rural Action so that we can show potential candidates the importance of our membership, share stories, and articulate our accomplishments and future.  Please email or mail your testimonials and ideas for potential candidates to me by September 3, 2010.  Thank you in advance!
