Energy for Sustainable Communities
June 26, 27, 28, 2015 — Union County Fairgrounds, La Grande, OR
SolWest Fair will highlight the “energy for sustainable communities” with three days of workshops, demonstrations, and vendors that focus on renewable energy and sustainability. SolWest Fair is a catalyst for homegrown prosperity, empowering individuals and communities to become more self reliant by developing renewable energy, robust food systems and thriving local economies. SolWest generates a strong network of bright ideas, deep connections and leadership with a template for what a sustainable future looks like, weaving communities together by developing a shared vision of that future.
We offer classes for continuing education credits for contractors, an electric vehicle show, and live entertainment. Networking and community will be important whether you’re camping or sharing locally grown food. We plan to create a guide to sustainability so that participants will walk away with a seven-year plan shaped by vendors and presenters. Come join the SolWest community and learn about energy efficiency, solar and wind energy, alternatively fueled vehicles, sustainable food and living, healthcare, homegrown prosperity, and more.
We are still shaping what SolWest will become, and encourage you to tell us what is important to you. The energy for building sustainable communities will come from far and wide to La Grande. Our rural style creates a unique synergy between self-sufficiency and community, conservation and homegrown prosperity. SolWest was previously held in John Day, Oregon. After 15 years of success, SolWest Fair shifted sponsorship from EORenew to Oregon Rural Action. Most of the rich and valuable traditions will be retained and the scope will be broadened.
Oregon Rural Action is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership-based community organization working to promote social justice, agricultural and economic sustainability, and stewardship of the region’s land, air and water. We’re bringing people together to build strong communities by providing information and tools for local people to use in addressing the issues affecting our communities.
Dozens of one-hour workshops help participants understand the basics of solar electricity, low-cost do-it-yourself solar projects, setting up wind, microhydro, or solar hot water systems, creating an off-grid paradise, constructing green buildings, raising small livestock, gardening, preserving food, among other topics.
