In March 2020, ORA Hispanic leaders in Umatilla and Morrow counties identified the need for more widely available and accessible information about COVID-19 pandemic among Spanish and indigenous language communities living and working in rural Eastern Oregon.

In response, ORA launched a communications strategy including a new weekly radio series called, Accíon Rural Hispana, which features interviews with Spanish and indigenous speaking public health experts and community leaders sharing vital information and amplifying publicly available information. On the ground efforts to keep our local Hispanic community informed and safe include partnerships with the Oregon Health Authority and local Hispanic-led groups to distribute PPE and COVID-19 informational materials.

helping provide access to mental health resources

We have partnered with the Oregon Latinx Leadership Network as part of our COVID-19 Spanish and Indigenous-language outreach to provide free access to mental health resources online and general information to immigrant communities through local churches.

expanding our work in umatilla & morrow counties

Since the formation of our radio show, Acción Rural Hispana in March 2020, we have continued to form relationships with Hispanic and medical leaders throughout the state, and have become a community partner of Oregon Health Authority. Through this partnership, ORA not only continues our weekly radio series, Acción Rural Hispana, but has distributed hundreds of bags filled with face masks, hand sanitizer and COVID-19 related information to the Spanish speaking community in Morrow and Umatilla counties.

This is needed now more than ever as Oregon has exceeded over 20 outbreaks throughout the state. We also know from studies conducted since the beginning of the pandemic, that Hispanic folks and BIPOC are particularly at risk nationwide.

In continuation of our partnership with Oregon Health Authority and the coalition we have formed with Raíces and United Farm Workers, we continue to host weekly PPE distribution events and free drive-thru COVID-19 testing events in Morrow and Umatilla counties. Check out our calendar to see upcoming events!
