Statement from Oregon Rural Action Regarding Governor Kotek’s Response to May Letter Outlining Community Needs in the Lower Umatilla Basin
It’s gratifying to see Governor Kotek once again recognize how serious this crisis is, but words are not enough. This is an ongoing emergency and it needs to be recognized as one – the lives and health of thousands of our neighbors are at risk, and it’s the State’s responsibility to protect them from further harm. But instead, the Governor is allowing another full year to test the 30% of remaining wells and has set the bar low on retesting at-risk wells. To date, the State has taken no substantive action to rein in the sources of pollution, it has allowed the contamination to continue with relative impunity, and there is no indication in the governor's letter that this will change.
We need the Governor to show courageous leadership by standing up to polluters and choosing to stand with our community. We again call on the Governor to declare an emergency and deliver on her promises by meeting the fundamental needs we outlined in our original letter last month.

Declaración de Oregon Rural Action sobre la respuesta de Gobernadora Kotek a la carta de Mayo que describe las necesidades de la comunidad en la Cuenca Baja de Umatilla
Es gratificante ver que la Gobernadora Kotek reconoce una vez más la gravedad de esta crisis, pero las palabras no son suficientes. Esto es una emergencia constante y debe ser reconocida como tal: las vidas y la salud de miles de nuestros vecinos están en riesgo, y es responsabilidad del Estado protegerlos de daños mayores. Pero en cambio, la Gobernadora está permitiendo otro año completo para probar el 30% de los pozos que faltan y ha puesto los estándares muy bajos para volver a probar los pozos en riesgo. Hasta la fecha, el Estado no ha tomado ninguna medida sustancial para controlar las fuentes de contaminación, ha permitido que la contaminación continúe con relativa impunidad y no hay ninguna indicación en la carta de la Gobernadora de que esto vaya a cambiar.
Necesitamos que la Gobernadora demuestre un liderazgo valiente al enfrentarse a los contaminadores y optar por apoyar a nuestra comunidad. Nuevamente pedimos a la Gobernadora que declare una emergencia y cumpla sus promesas satisfaciendo las necesidades fundamentales que describimos en nuestra carta original el mes pasado.
